Marti Witherow

PhD, LPC, LMFT

Dr. Marti Witherow has 20 years of experience working with couples, families and individuals. She graduated from one of the oldest universities in Europe, Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary (est. 1635) with a Phd in Clinical Psychology and Addictionology, and also holds a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and Counseling from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi.

Dr. Witherow is currently pursuing a postdoctoral MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology (MSCP) degree at Fairleigh Dickinson University (APA designated), with the goal of becoming a prescribing psychologist. She is an avid learner of psychopharmacology, applied neuroscience and medical psychology with an eye towards brain research translated into enduring patient benefit.

She is an APA and AAMFT Clinical Fellow and has extensive training in several areas of psychology and counseling, including Internal Family Systems Therapy, chronic sexual pain disorders and psychological treatment of sexual dysfunctions. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MS #T0415), Licensed Professional Counselor (MS #1252) in the State of Mississippi, a Licensed Psychologist (AL #2384) in the State of Alabama and a Certified Sex Therapist (by the American Board of Christian Sex Therapists).

Dr. Witherow is passionate about marriage and family therapy. She has had great success helping couples overcome obstacles and restore their relationships, even after extramarital affairs. Utilizing advanced training in the Gottman method developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, Marti helps couples manage conflict, support each other’s hopes and aspirations, and create lasting trust. She is a public speaker, has conducted multiple seminars, courses and workshops, and is an avid academic, conducting her own clinical research in marital intimacy issues.

Both when working with individuals and couples, she often uses her unique training in Internal Family Systems Therapy. The IFS therapy model offers a clear, non-pathologizing and empowering method of understanding human problems that has been shown to help reduce a variety of presenting problems such as anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms or compulsive behaviors.

Counseling for Sexual Issues

Marti’s approach to treatment of sexual dysfunction is rooted in her training in neuropsychology for chronic pain management, sexual medicine and a theologically-informed Christian framework to therapy. She  incorporates high professional standards and excellent training to help couples, individuals and families deal with sensitive sex related concerns. She coordinates treatment with other providers such as OB-GYN doctors and physical therapists.

Internal Family Systems

Marti has Level 3 training in IFS. This approach brings together the best of both worlds, family systems thinking and the multiplicity of the mind. It is a very effective model, especially when you may be stuck with reoccurring patterns of behavior.

Dr. Witherow's doctoral dissertation and research is in female sexual disorders. Her research was published in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Sexual Medicine and Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy. She is currently enrolled in an APA approved psychopharmacology program and is a member of Division 55: Society for Prescribing Psychology, created to enhance psychological treatments combined with psychopharmacological medications. When she is not talking to someone about life, she can be found on her spin bike, at the beach with her kids or reading John Calvin, just for the fun of it.
