Laurie Upchurch

Laurie is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from Mississippi College and holds a Master of Arts in Counseling from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi. For the past two years, she has worked as a therapist in a community mental health center and provided individual and family therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. She is now a Licensed Professional Counselor and is excited to be working in private practice. 

Laurie’s approach to the therapeutic relationship is client-centered. She seeks to prioritize the individual and has flexibility in how she comes alongside each person to meet their unique needs. She provides counseling through talk therapy and through play. As a foundation for understanding her clients, she uses her Christian worldview to guide how she cares for her clients with dignity and inherent value. She seeks to provide a safe and welcoming space for her clients to grow in knowledge of themselves and in relationships with others. She has a special interest in working with children, adolescents, and their parents.

Children and Adolescents

Laurie’s approach to working with children and adolescents is informed by clinical experience and studies of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She enjoys using her creativity to provide a space for individuals to learn about themselves and the world around them through expressive art, therapeutic games and activities, and play.

Family Therapy

Laurie’s training at RTS and her clinical experience informs her approach in working with families. She believes that family relationships are an integral part of learning about the world, ourselves, and relationships with others. She aims to use her Family Systems training to identify patterns, roles, and messages within the family system to foster openness and communication.

Adults

While Laurie is passionate about working with children, adolescents, and families, she holds a special place in her heart for individuals who are experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, self-esteem issues, interpersonal relationship conflicts, and boundary-related issues. Her training at RTS and clinical experience in the mental health field has equipped her to work with individuals of various ages and stages of life. Laurie’s approach to working with individuals is informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and the Gottman method.

Laurie is a Madison, Mississippi native. When she isn’t seeing clients, Laurie is most likely browsing the grocery store to create delicious meals for her family and friends. She enjoys going on walks, watercoloring, spending time with friends and family, and finding joy in the everyday moments.
